Description: An important and rare French Louis XV period bureau plat made of solid mahogany, mahogany veneer, and oak. The piece represents the beginning of the use of mahogany during the beginning of the reign of Louis XV. It is a piece of furniture that is remarkable in its conception and fabrication.

The bureau plat opens with two drawers on one side. The top has a leather surface for writing and two, rare compartments on the top that lock. There is a third compartment in the center that opens to reveal a lectern. Two marks, “JME”, are found on the back and one is found on the side; however, the name of the maker is not visible. We know of similar examples, one made by André-Charles Boulle and three others by Charles Cressent.

The leather has been replaced.
